Bijli Mahadev is one of the sacred temples of God Shiv, in form of Linga made up by butter and sattoo in Himachal Pradesh, situated at an altitude of about 2,460m in the Kullu Valley. Bijli Mahadev is one of the excellent temples in India. Located 22 km from Kullu across the Beas river, it can be approached by a rewarding trek of 3 km. You can hire Himachal Taxi's to go up there. Beautiful but dangerous tracking compel you to chant the God all the way.
In this temple of lightning, it is said that the tall staff attracts the divine blessings in the form of lightning. A panoramic view of Kullu and Paravati valleys can be seen from the temple. The 60 feet high staff of Bijli Mahadev temple glistens like a silver needle in the sun.
It is believed that the priest of the temple has to restore the Shiva linga placed inside the temple using butter and sattoo after every lightning as it shatters to pieces with flash of lightning. The lightning is once in every year. All the village people brings butter and sattoo and till the Linga wake up again the temple is closed for visitors, only priest can reopen it. The peace and beauty of nature are the true blessings of the God here.
